Next installment in our podcast series comes from KOZZMOZZ resident and TOKEN label boss KR!Z. Known for his hard edged and underground techno excursions this “COFFEE, DRUMS & CIGARETTES” podcast shows a different angle in his love for music. “I guess this must be the first time ever I record a podcast that doesn’t represent me as a techno-dj.
Basically this is the music I listen to daily, in a home/car/ipod.. setting, away from the club. I forgot a whole bunch of favourite tracks/styles. Wish I’d put in some soul/funk, drum & bass, dubstep, house, some more jazz (how could I forget Hancock, Mulatu or Sun Ra?), even more Dilla, more Madlib..
The mix is a bit rough around the edges & maybe a bit too long, but overall I’m pretty comfortable with sharing this with you.

After 12 is opnieuw te gast bij Democrazy en zorgt voor een onvergetelijke avond met groovy house/sub music-DJ’s Mosca en Ben UFO.

►►Mosca -Numbers Uk-

Londenaar Mosca heeft er een schitterend jaar opzitten. Engelse dj’s Gilles
Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs en Benji B katapulteerden hem naar grote bekendheid. Wat begon op piratenradio’s, Rinse FM en Deja Vu FM leidde hem ook hier naar grotere bekendheid: zijn track ‘Bax’ was één van de meest aanstekelijke dancefloor anthems van het jaar. Mosca’s nummers zijn gemaakt om de dansvloer te veroveren, maar zijn tegelijk zeer gesofisticeerd opgebouwd met invloeden uit grime, uk bass, garage, funk, hiphop en soulvolle house. November jl. kwam zijn ep ‘The wavey’ uit. De alternatieve muziekliefhebbers kennen hem ongetwijfeld ook via de remixes voor Four
Tet en Foals of via releases op 3024, Hypercolour en Ghost House.

►►Ben UFO -Hessle Audio Uk-

Ben Ufo (Ben Thomson) is een van de meest veelzijdige Dj’s van het moment. Samen met Pangaea en Pearson Sound (Ramadanman) richtte hij het Hessle Audio Label op. Terwijl die twee zich al uitstekende producers toonden, maakt Ben Ufo enkel als DJ naam, zonder de wereld van producers te willen binnentreden. Een uitstekende keuze zo blijkt, want de piraatradio en record label Rinse vroeg hem -in navolging van o.a. Roska en Youngsta- voor de alweer 16e editie van hun befaamde DJ-mixes Rinse 16. Met deze mix verzamelt Ben UFO de meest vooruitstrevende, vreemde en futuristische elektronische muziek van de laatste tijd op één plaatje. Een uitstekend naslagwerk voor wie houdt van bassy house music! Op dit album bewijst hij zich opnieuw als uitstekende mixmaster die als geen ander de crème de la crème uit de vinylkast weet te selecteren en oud en nieuw naadloos op elkaar laat aansluiten. Jungle, Blue Note jazz, techno en garage, je kunt het allemaal voorbij horen komen!

Sleeper & District begonnen collaboratief samen te werken in 2010. Allebei met de focus op het creeëren van de diepere kanten van Dubstep. Na veel airplay te krijgen op de welgekende UK radiozender “Rinse FM” door Dubstep dons zoals Youngsta & Distance, besloot Distance ze te signen op zijn label ‘Chestplate’. Nu behoren ze tot de Chestplate familie met ondere andere grote namen als Cyrus en Tunnidge.

Democrazy: AFTER 12

Voor de derde maal is het dubstepcollectief After 12 te gast in de Balzaal van Vooruit. In 2007 prijkte Mala al op de affiche. Na 4 jaar werd het tijd om deze absolute pioneer van het dubstep genre nog eens uit te nodigen. Samen met Coki en Loefah vormt hij Digital Mystikz en hij is de labelbaas van Deep Medi (zie ook Silkie, Kromestar, Loefah, Goth Trad en Skream). Zijn dj sets kenmerken zich door een diep geluid met een sterke invloed van dub en reggae. Mala staat nog altijd overtuigend voor hoe dubstep moet klinken: donker, bevreemdend en een tikkeltje onheilspellend.

Tweede headliner is UK funky grondlegger Roska. Dit genre kan het best omschreven worden als garage/2step bestuifd met Afrikaanse en Caraïbische ritmes. Begonnen als MC in de Londense garage scene evolueerde ROSKA tot een ervaren dj en producer. In 2009 krijg hij zijn eigen show op Rinse.fm, dé referentie voor alles wat UK bass minded is. Zijn carriere kreeg hierdoor een enorme boost en verschillende releases en remixes op oa Rinse, Tectonic, Numbers en zijn eigen Kick&Snares label volgden.Op enkele van deze releases werkte hij samen met zanger Jamie George. Deze “melodic storyteller” zal ook aanwezig zijn op deze After 12 editie voor een exclusieve performance!

De Belgische kleuren worden deze keer vertegenwoordigd door Primate en Digid. Primate, het dubstep alter ego van Wasp, is het brein achter het Hasseltse LOOP concept. DIGID heeft releases uit op Rest In Beatz en Bass Punch en is onlangs getekend op het nieuwe Warriorz label. Samen opereren ze ook als duo onder hun UNDERTONE moniker.

After 12 residents van dienst zijn Imune, Lucky7, Mate en Fudge.

Joe Nice is a 31-year-old Baltimore Dubstep DJ.The most famous American DJ playing Dubstep, Nice founded New York’s irregular Dub War club night, which has hosted performances by British Dubstep artists such as Hatcha, Youngsta, Kode9,Mala, and Loefah. He performs regularly in New York, London (including at scene pillar DMZ),and elsewhere. He first heard Dubstep in 2002, at the Baltimore venue Starscape, and began playing it that same year.He has been praised for his charisma and stage presence. In 2005 music journalist Martin Clark also praised him for his access to new dubplates (in contrast to other American Dubstep DJs) and willingness to play tracks by lesser-known producers.In 2007, Nice was selected as one of URB magazine’s “Next 100″.
He has played the legendary DOUR festival where his set got burnt into everybody’s eardrums…

Distance was the first dubstep dj we booked back in 2006.
Its the 3rd time we got him over and he never dissapoints.
Distance as producer, DJ and label owner (Chestplate Records), has been pushing things in a direction all of his own. Gathering early support from the legendary John Peel and going on to be part of the utterly seminal Dubstep Warz show on Radio 1 presented by Mary Anne Hobbs, Distance has forged a name for himself as a critical figure in the scene.

If you’re a fan of heavy metal, industrial rock, dub, reggae and techno….then this is the sound for you. Though hard to relate these binary opposite genres together, somehow…Distance does just that

Vanuit Antwerpen, Brussel, Oostende, Kortrijk (E40, E17)

Volg Uitrit ‘Gent Centrum’, daarna volg je ‘Alle Richtingen’. Eens beneden draai je aan de verkeerslichten (onder het viaduct) links de stadsring op. Deze volg je tot aan de tweede verkeerslichten. Daar sla je rechts af, de Overpoortstraat in. Rij tot aan het Sint-Pietersplein, waar je kan parkeren in de (goedkoopste) ondergrondse parking. Vooruit ligt in de Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat, op wandelafstand van de parking. (zie ook verder bij Parkeren)

Om Gent binnen te rijden via het Zuidplein (ondergrondse parking dichtbij Vooruit) volg je vanop de E40 of E17 afrit ‘Gent Centrum’. Kies daarna voor een tweede maal ‘Gent Centrum’ in plaats van ‘Alle Richtingen’. Eens beneden ga je rechtdoor aan de verkeerslichten (het Zuidpark ligt links van je). Blijf op de linkerstrook en rijd zo de ondergrondse parking binnen. Bij het verlaten van de parking, houd je de bibliotheek op je linkerkant en het shoppingcenter op je rechter en wandel je naar boven naar Vooruit.
